The European Dialogue on Internet Governance (EuroDIG) is an open multi-stakeholder platform to exchange views about the Internet and how it is governed. Created in 2008 by several organisations, government representatives and experts, it fosters dialogue and collaboration with the Internet community on public policy for the Internet. Culminating in an annual conference that takes place in a different European city. EuroDIG ‘Messages’ are prepared and presented to the Internet Governance Forum (IGF).

Goals

The main aim of EuroDIG is to promote the engagement of Europeans in multistakeholder dialogue in order to share their expertise and best practice and, where possible, identify common ground. This enables EuroDIG to pull together national perspectives and to apply and shape European values and views regarding the Internet. It is the place to start and to facilitate a discussion not to finalise it and therefore a decision shaping not a decision making initiative.

We want to generate the debate on whether it is possible and necessary to implement a simple labelling system for new technologies on aspects that affect fundmental rights as transparency, privacy, freedom of expression,...

We advocate the need for a unified solution than can help end-users, companies, and Privacy Authorities (PAs) to get back the control on their private data. We do not want “yet another tool” to protect end-users’ privacy by blocking online ads, or trackers.

This indeed would fuel the arms-race with advertisers and tracking companies, forced to design new mechanisms to evade the filters (as already happening with websites blocking access to the content in case a privacy enhancing plugin is detected). This race would negatively impact the digital advertising ecosystem, limiting innovation, destroying the freemium model and causing the disappearance of those services that survive thanks to the advertising support. Ultimately, it can lead to loss of jobs and increase of costs for online services.

We believe in empowering end-users, PAs, and companies with shared new solutions that allows them to take back the control on their data, anywhere, anytime, in any network, with any device.
